Noel Gallagher: New album contains my best songs

Not shy to big himself up or his former band's contribution to rock music, Noel Gallagher has had no problem heaping plenty of praise on his new record.

The former Oasis songwriter and guitarist told NME that his debut studio album, High Flying Birds, was a creative tour de force.

"[It is] the best collection of songs I've written for a long time," he said.

However, chart success might be a long way away – his lead single The Death of You and Me came in at a disappointing 15.

He remained sanguine.

Gallagher told the magazine: "I know that this is the most concise, literal and lyrical album I've written for a long time, and that says more about me as a songwriter because it's all me, apart from the drums and some of the keyboards."

The singer-songwriter recently blasted wacky pop star Lady Gaga, claiming her success was a product of her eccentricities rather than her music.

He admitted his daughter didn't share his views. " Her album gets played a lot around my house by my daughter and it's Madonna-lite. Madonna was hardcore. She took it to the edge musically as well as everything else."
